Einstein’s Riddle | Complete Solution to Einsteins Puzzle

January 7, 2011

I have been a fan of Einstein. But I never knew he had left us a puzzle that was so interesting. I am not sure if this is a real Einstein creation but it definitely got a touch of a genius. I enjoyed each moment of solving the problem.

People claim only 2% of world’s population is capable of solving this puzzle.
So I took that as a challenge. You see being a Aries you simply cant bear to be outside the elite.

Here is the riddle.

1. In a street there are five houses, painted five different colours.
2. In each house lives a person of different nationality
3. These five homeowners each drink a different kind of beverage, smoke different brand of cigar and keep a different pet.

5. The owner of the Green house drinks coffee.
6. The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.

12. The man who smokes Blue Master drinks beer.

15. The man who smokes Blends has a neighbor who drinks water.

Solving the puzzle will give you a feeling of victory like never before. LOL
Initially it looked like I would blow up my mind. Then I took a mathematical approach. You cant simple solve the damn thing just by staring at the clues. Get your pencil and notepad.
Use a tabular layout like cross words puzzles and fill in empty cells with clues one by one.

give it your best shot…if you need help I have a step by step approach how to do it.
It took me 1 hour and 10 minutes to do this. Including creating that chart in photoshop and putting up this blog post. Cheers.

  1. 1,1 is Norwegian (ref9)
  2. 2,2 is Blue (ref14)
  3. 3,4 is milk (ref 8)
  4. 4,2 and 5,2 and green and white (ref4)
  5. 4,4 is coffee (ref5)
  6. 1,2  is yellow and 3,1 is Brit and 3,2 is red (ref1)
  7. 1,5 is Dunhill (ref7)
  8. 2,3 is horses (ref 11)
  9. 2,5 is Blends and 1,4 is water (ref15)
  10. 5,4 is beer and 5,5 is blue master (ref 12 ) and no available combinations
  11. Either 4,1 or 5,1 is sweede then either of 1,3 or 3,3 is cats then either of 4,3 or 5,3 is dogs(ref 10,2)
  12. Either of 2,1 or 5,1 is dane (ref 3)
  13. So 2,1 is Dane (ref 3)
  14. 4,1 is German and 5,1 is Swede (ref 13)
  15. 3,5 is Pall Mall as no other choice remains
  16. 3,3 is birds (ref 6)
  17. 5,3 is Dogs (previous analysis and Ref 2)
  18. 1,3 is cats (from previous analysis and ref 10)
  19. Leaves us with Fish for the German – I should have guessed that ..given their affinity for Submarines lol. Took me 1 hours and 10 mins

  1. einsteins puzzles answer is the man who is norwegian and lives in yellow house and have pet cat.

  2. I SOLVED IT! WOO HOO, MOTHER FUCKERS, WOOOOOO HOOOOOOO!:P Man, you were right, I do feel victorious 😀

  3. I am not a math wiz, so I could not take the calculus/algebraic approach. I went with Photoshop. 🙂

It took about 30 minutes to setup the Photoshop drawing. From there I was able to solve the puzzle in only 10 minutes.

I gave the puzzle to some co-workers and it’s interesting to see what tools they use for solving. Some pencil/paper, some are using Excel. One guy is using MS Paint. And some weirdo used Photoshop.

  4. Excuse me Sorry for interruption , According to my analysis , center is White(milk) so automatically its pet =cat, Blend is next to cat and Next is Norwegian( water cause its blend neighbour since milk is already occupied in center ) so pet =fish 🙂 So its NORWEGIAN, dont’ believe me , C the norwegian sea. 🙂

  5. dat wasnt so tough…jus had quite a lot of detailing..so was a bit time consuming….took me around 45 mins to solve it

  6. I was tempted to look at the solution a while ago but when I read “Solving the puzzle will give you a feeling of victory like never before. LOL”
    I got fired up! :))
No, it took me around 15 minutes doing nothing but tabulating the descriptions. It surprised me that I got exactly all the answers correct. It’s so… unlikely.

  7. Dear Sir,
A simple approacj would be to use spread sheet. It just took me 15 minutes though initially I felt it is quite disjointed or even a joke, it is exiting to match the result! As I did bit fast, only confirming German as answer reassures rather than a double check!

  8. hey, thnx 4 uploading such a good puzzle.it took me 35 min 2 solve it.as u said after completing i felt different..

  9. He is the German whose home painted green in color, drinks coffee and smokes the Prince cigar …. OWNS fish .. it took me 25 mins to solve

  10. took a pad and drew 5 small houses, on top of each house i wrote whatever needed to correct the math!!

  11. Nailed it, took me 1 year 1 month 1 day 3 hours 24 minutes and 30 !!! seconds. since the question was “who has the fish?” and i said the german… cuase einstein was a german, which aslo had 25% change of being right!, and so it was.
after that i started to puzzle and figured it out with pen and paper.

and to awnser Rav Apu, the green house drinks the coffe, so after you noticed that the 1st house is yellow and the 2nd house is blue, then the 3th house drinks milk, there for the 4th house must be green and drinks coffee.

  12. Just to think outside the box, everyone except the cat owner, can have dogs/horses/birds AND fishes as pets.It did not say each owner can only have 1 type of pets.So 4/5 of these people can have fishes as pets.the last owner can also have any other species of pets and not be fish.(hamster/snakes/spiders/etc)

  13. I wish to challenge your solution! I believe that Einstein did not intend a logical solution. He was a humanitarian and towards the end of his life he became a vegetarin, and he intended the solution to be:

Answer: No one can truly own a living creature. You can keep it, and rear it, and even put it in a cage. But you can’t “own” it.

  14. I solved it few days back , now verified the answer, I was correct.
I thought about different logics like- man with pet cat drinks milk…..
Even tried with map of country location
    Tried with flag colours
Finally tried with pen and paper, and found German as answer, but wasn’t sure until now
    Feeling happy ????
    Thank you for answer
